May 2018 The WCS Senior Band infront of Bow River Falls, Banff, Alberta

WCS Band

Westcliffe Composite School has featured several bands since the program was started: a Senior Band which consists of students in Grades 8-12, a Junior Band, which includes Grades 6-7, and a beginner band of Grade 5.  Each year, the community is entertained by the School Bands at the Winter Band Concert in January and again at Spring Band Concert in June.  For the past several years, the bands have competed at the Kindersley Music Festival under the direction of Mr. Brown. In addition, many students have participated in and received awards at the annual Kindersley Music Festival.  Music has remained an important part in the lives of many graduates, some of which have gone on to further their studies in music.

The Band Parents' Association is very active and it is through their fundraising efforts and hours of volunteerism that the Concert Band has been able to perform on tours to various destinations.  Every five years the Senior Band goes on a bigger trip/tour to further develop their music education.  The Senior Band’s latest trip was to Banff, where in addition to working with renowned clinicians and conductors to further their skills, they were able to experience many of the local attractions and take in Harry Potter concert performed by the CSO.

Westcliffe Drama Club

The Westcliffe Drama Club is an extremely active extra-curricular program. Every year we begin practicing in January to prepare for the Regional Festival, which is usually held in late March or early April. Practices occur twice a week. We usually present one performance at Westcliffe and do our final performance at the festival.
The Regional Festival is usually held in Maple Creek or Swift Current. It has a variety of schools performing and the adjudication is usually conducted by drama professionals from Saskatchewan. The first part of adjudication consists of back stage, which is the technical rehearsal and the behind the scene people, such as the director, sound, lights and running crew. The second part of adjudication is the front stage, which observes the actual performance of the play, including the actors and overall affect.

Over the years Westcliffe has been recognized with awards in a variety of areas. The club has been recognized for sound, lights and acting. The most recent major awards earned were Best Technical Production in 2011 and Best Technical Crew 2012. These are prestigious awards and as Westcliffe is always the smallest school it is something the school can be very proud of.
